St. Ignace Harbour

The Fishermen Memorial
the plaque reads
Before the white man came, Native Indian tribes supplied their needs with fresh and dried fish from these lakes.
Later, others joined in the fishing business, many of them from the Scandinavian countries.
In the 1800's sailing ships transported hundreds of barrels of salted fish from nearby St. Helena Island to Chicago and Detroit.
In the early 1900's passenger ships stopped at St. Ignace and picked up fish for their guests. Daily trains also picked up tons of fish to deliver on their routes to New York.
Now in the 2000's commercial fishing is still carried on, mostly by Native American fishermen.

St. Anthony’s Rock
is one of several ‘sea stacks’ in the Straits Area. It is made of Mackinac breccia, a type of stone formed 350 million years ago, when the roofs of deep caves collapsed into stacks of fragmented rock. Calcium carbonate in circulating groundwater cemented the stacks of limestone, dolomite and chert into much harder formations than surrounding unbroken limestone. Much later, glaciers covered this area, then began melting about 12,000 years ago. Wave action in the resulting lakes eroded the adjacent soft stone, leaving St. Anthony’s Rock exposed by 2000 B.C.

Veterans Memorial Bridge

Fargo, North Dakota

Friday, July 26, 2019:  The 8-foot high version of Lady Liberty mounted on a pedestal next to the entrance to the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Main Avenue was reported missing Monday. Mayor Tim Mahoney says a construction camera near the area that takes hourly photos indicates the theft took place sometime between midnight and 1 a.m Sunday. He calls the theft "disrespectful."

Mahoney says the 150-pound statue was bolted down so tools would have been required to steal it.

The Statue of Liberty was presented to the City of Fargo almost 70 years ago by the Lions Club and for years stood in Island Park before being moved to the bridge area in the late 1980's.

Ellensburg, WA

Ellensburg is a city in and county seat of Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 20,977 in a 2018 census estimate. Located just east of the Cascade Range on Interstate 90, Ellensburg is the most centrally located city in the state, and is the home of Central Washington University (CWU).
The surrounding Kittitas Valley is internationally known for the timothy hay that it produces. There are several local hay brokering and processing operations that ship to Pacific Rim countries. Downtown Ellensburg has many historic buildings, many of which were constructed in the late 19th century. This is a legacy of its bid to be the state capital, which it lost to Olympia.  CWU being placed there is another product of that legacy. The state legislature selected Ellensburg as the location for the then Normal School as a consolation prize. ( Info courtesy of Wikipedia)

The Cadwell Building
After the Great Ellensburgh Fire of 1889, Edward P. Cadwell, a lawyer and abstractor of titles, and J.C. Lloyd, owner of Lloyd Mercantile Co., dry goods, clothing and grocery, partnered to build a new building at 114 East Third Avenue. The two men were able to secure approximately one million bricks to build the building.
The Lloyd-Cadwell Building was constructed as 60 x 80 feet, two stories high, with offices upstairs and two retail stores on the ground floor. The estimated cost of construction was $15,000.
In September 1889, Cadwell bought Lloyd's interest in the building for $5,000. The building was then called the "Cadwell".
Today it is the home of the Kittitas County Historical Museum.

Dick and Jane's Spot (1)

an art site and a home. Dick and Jane made most of the art you see but we have also collected art. The works of over 40 Northwest artists are on display in the yard. Generally, what you see from outside the fence is what you see. The rest is our private yard so please respect the fences. The Spot has been a work in progress for 35 years. There are over 10,000 bottle caps and thousands of reflectors. The pieces in the yard are always changing. Old pieces decay and new ones are added.  it is located in Ellensburg, Washington.
Dick & Jane's Spot is dedicated to the philosophy that "one hearty laugh is worth ten trips to the doctor."   Info courtesy of Reflectorart website
